Social Security
On March 2005 David M. Walker, Comptroller General,
U.S. Government Accountability Office gave testimony before the
Full Committee of the House Committee on Ways and Means:
"Social Security’s cash surplus—the difference between program tax income -- and the costs of paying scheduled benefits -- will begin a permanent decline in 2008. By 2018, the program’s cash flow is projected to turn negative"

National Debt
It's in the newspapers. David Walker has been recently touring
the country with a "wake-up call":
"If the U.S. government conducts business as usual over the next few decades, a national debt that is already $8.5 trillion could reach $46 trillion or more, adjusted for inflation. That's almost as much as the total net worth of every person in America..."

The "Trade Ticker" claims to be the web's only up-to-the-second counter for the U.S. Trade Deficit. It's jumping at about 25 thousand dollars a second. That's over 65 billion a month. To see the ticker CLICK HERE.

The Energy Economy
A large amount of information and links are at the site, Life After the Oil Crash. It might sound a bit alarmist to talk of an oil crash, but it eventually must happen with any nonrenewable resource. Any controversy is concerned with when it will happen.
Farmers require energy to grow crops, Two hundred years ago, they got more energy out of the crops than it took to grow them (calories, horses to till the soil, etc.). They could not survive otherwise. Today it requires an average of 10 calories of hydrocarbon energy to grow 1 calorie of food. This includes fertilizer, pesticides, refrigeration, packaging, and transportation. See the article, Eating Fossil Fuels or the book.
Immigration
A very interesting video by Roy Beck on the consequences
of current immigration policy is at this site: Immigration
by the Numbers. The video is compassionate, politically neutral, and
shocking. It shows in very graphic terms how current policies
will affect the future. It is over 13 minutes long. A high speed
modem is needed. Hit the pause button and let the buffer run for a bit
to prevent interruptions.
